Toque Rockola set to enrapture Des Moines Dec. 28 with 5 acts representing 6 countries; Local musicians anchor the scene

DES MOINES, IA – In its fifth year running Toque Rockola will feature the cultures of six countries with five bands in one night on Friday, Dec. 28. Some styles to be represented are reggae, Americana, cumbia, vallenato, Peruvian Waltz, Plena, Salsa, Samba, Bossa Nova, and Cha-Cha-Cha.

The five bands are composed of more than twenty local and international musicians– Leradee Fomsi from Nigeria, Dustin Smith from Des Moines, Fernando Aveiga from Ecuador, Michael Nunez from Peru, Thia Lee from Brazil, and Eddie Colon from Puerto Rico to name a few.

Toque (pronounced TOE-kay) Rockola is Spanish slang for “gig jukebox”. The event is coordinated by Toque Music Management of Des Moines, run by Iowa residents Ryan Mullin, Goizane Esain Mullin, Fernando Aveiga and Nick Leo who hope to increase the visibility of the multiculturalism that already exists in Des Moines through music and art.

Mullin said, “I’m like a lot of Iowans in that I sought out other places to live and learn for a few years, but then realized you can create your own fun and diverse environment here in Iowa because it’s such a welcoming and open-minded place. It’s been eye opening to see just how much international appeal our city has, and I am really happy that folks who are from out of town – and pretty far out of town – are accepted and embraced here. It makes me prouder of where I grew up than I could have ever imagined.”
